I might come on board a bit more often with 1998 as this was a delightful edition. A great mix of songs and made better by being presided over by Jamie Theakston who has already settled right into the role. His endless drollery is really enjoyable (particular favourite, his link to Madonna at No.1; "she's frozen, bless her") and look forward to his coming run as presenter.
ReplyDeleteCornershop; No.1 last week and starting the show this week. Have I missed something? These latest charts have been rather baffling, surprising as now we're firmly into the straight in at No.1 era. Good to see though with a sitar upright and not being played by anyone. Intriguing. Good to hear them sticking to the less cheerful, non remix version.
Finlay Quaye; Another brilliant single from this man. Should've been in the charts for years, he was so original with one of the most singular voices of the time. His later work for the homeless marks him as a real genuine hero. 'Your Love Gets Sweeter Everyday' is really simple and infectious and great to hear in acoustic form. Finley looks oddly gauche throughout, looking down like he's got the lyrics on the floor but a really good performance.
Celine Dion; OK, I'll succumb. Beautifully performed and the lucky kids sway around her like passengers on a mildly listing ship. In the background you could see various images from the movie but obviously girls in sportswear is more compelling.
Hinda Hicks; Maybe after the Brand New Heavies crowd who were very popular at the time. A decent burst of jazz soul with a good voice though rather over singing at points. Good chorus to that.
Robyn; Sorry Angelo, just to add that Robyn had four top 10 hits in the UK; This one as well as ''Dancing On My Own', 'Be Mine!' and the fantastic 'With Every Heartbeat'. Sorry I'll go back to my attic. Nice arrival for Robyn (not with an S) on a Zebra set which reveals a nice bit of last gasp randomness from the producer. She looks really sweet and the song is very charming.
Space feat Cerys Matthews; Good to be reminded what an in demand pop star Tommy Scott was for a brief time. Sideburns were certainly popular at university at that exact time (my last term). Him and Cerys are a great double act and she looks gorgeous with a look of pleasant suprise when a pair of knickers gets thrown on stage at the appropriate time. Good move to show the man himself on a '60s Top of the Pops in slow mo. It's really great to revisit this single with a chorus that sounded halfway between the theme of 'Sale of the Century' and Pigs In Space. The rest of it very cool and '60s. I noticed Cerys didn't exactly yell the word "nuts". Video to this was hilarious.
Spice Girls; The live somewhere else screen being watched by the audience was a nice touch. They all sing it well, particularly Mel B but there's not much to that song for me.
Madonna; 'Frozen' is a beautiful No.1 with a very atmospheric video, undone slightly by the sharing of the screen with a grinning, un raven-menaced crowd jumping about. Even so a really strong ending.
