  2. This was a quite a visually exciting edition with a very eyecatching Legs routine and a set full of lights and sparkly discs for the.....discs. Also a screen wiping effect for everything which on one occasion actually resembles a windscreen wiper. Noel Edmonds also dressed for visual effect. Well his hair anyway. At its most medievel here. Noel links to the charts with a joke and a curious overstatement at the end.
    Chart rundown; Great track. Pictures; Georgio; Hairy. David Essex; Intense. Leo Sayer; Not so much. The Dooleys; Get in line please. Meri Wilson; Very pink. Danny Mirror; Seems like an interesting artist.

    Smokie; A pleasant, rather pedestrian cover of 'Needles and Pins' but looks marvellous, starting off among such a dazzle of discs that it almost could be the end credit sequence. Totp really upped their game in Autumn '77 and this is a visual treat throughout. Lots of smiles and someone at the front in a ludicrous, even for this period, hat.

    The Emotions; Noel was spot on. Definitely one of the best records of the year and another rare invite to the rather better dancers of 'Soul Train'. Suprisingly Totp had the better set this week but so cool to see the audience here and a great routine from the trio.

    Danny Mirror; ..."self explanatory..." Yes, that's one thing you could call this. Legendarily awful homage to the late King of Rock n Roll although it didn't seem quite as bad as I thought it was. Certainly unintentionally funny as is his costume. And his close ups. A song that felt like it was going to go on for a month and Robin Nash is in no hurry to bring up the applause track. A moments silence after that, ideally.

    Giorgo; Wow! What are they doing to our eyes! Yes it's surely derived from the new Bond film and thus didn't take a great leap of imagination from Flick or the lighting department but to an absolute electro belter, this is a stunning few minutes. Strangely this is the sort of sound and image I immediately associate with 1977. Lulu quite the sillouhette

    1. The same Emotions group on the Soul Train clip were on the single and video of Boogie Wonderland as Earth Wind & Fire and The Emotions a couple of years later in 1979, where between the two groups there were about 15 people on stage in that iconic video.

  3. Pt. 2;
    Typing this on a moving bus so hit publish before finishing and typing my name. Or reading it so it's all probably nonsense.

    Yes; The only thing of theirs I've ever cared for and good to see it here in grainy live form. I like the way the song meanders to the title phrase and Rick Wakeman keeps the keyboarding to a reasonable level.

    Deniece Williams; Live in the studio and a lovely, engaging presence which takes up most of the camera's attention. In fact the audience barely feature although the person in the daft hat is difficult to avoid and the top of it makes a brief appearance.

    The Stranglers; A classic appearance for 'No More Heroes' with the dry ice dispersing malarkey and Hugh Cornwell daring the audience to watch this looking '77 bored. They don't, maybe because it's now late '77 and punk is well and truly here. I noticed a woman at the front who turns to her friends and reveals herself to be a dead ringer for Agnetha from ABBA.
    It's a very committed performance with Hugh really shredding that guitar for the solo.

    Bacarra; Soon to be at No.1 and a nice, joyful and dated few minutes. The duo smiley and swaying under another disc. I don't know what the flowers in the audience were in aid of.

    Steve Gibbons Band; More rock n roll, again probably a hit thanks to recent events. A great frontman he is and he does a good amount of moving out to the audience.

    David Soul; Comedy audience joshing from Noel into the No.1 and a favourite tune from early childhood due to it being played so much on late morning Radio 2 around 1979. The two vastly differing pairs of trousers clip.

    A final gag of indeterminate purpose from Noel and a lady before we're treated to even less of 'Thunder In My Heart' than the dance version gave us.

    1. Was enlightened to read that David Soul appeared on the original series of Star Trek in 1967 as Makora in an episode called The Apple, this around 10 years before the Silver Lady single, and as a young man in his early 20s with the crew of the starship enterprise.
