(NEW) WHITNEY HOUSTON – My Love Is Your Love
Performing a song that will peak at number 2.
(11) FIERCE – Dayz Like That
With their second of four top 40 hits but this one got no higher.
(14) KULA SHAKER – Shower Your Love
In the studio with their eighth and final top 40 hit but it got no higher.
(12) PETE HELLER – Big Love
Here with his only hit and it was at its peak.
(4) STEREOPHONICS – Pick A Part That’s New
Performing the third single from their number one album, Performance and Cocktails, but it got no higher.
(1) BACKSTREET BOYS – I Want It That Way (and credits)
With their only number on hit and it was there for just one week.

The 911 single is a cover of the original by Judy Clay and William Bell in 1968 which is worth a listen, as it is far superior and more listenable.
ReplyDelete2nd January 1979Magnificent single the original of 'Private Number'. I had a little look at Top of the Pops listings from when it came out and it must be one of the greatest singles that the show didn't feature, either as a studio performance or as a promo or totp film. Only played once with audience dancing on 2nd January 1969.
DeletePredictive again! Don't know what the initial date is on there for! 2nd January '69 it got a spin.
DeleteSome good surprises on this edition. I thought Cloud Number 9 was delightful. Forgotten how good that one was. Whitney Houston's single still sounds beautiful and ageless and the other surprising highlight was Kula Shaker. Another one I forgot about and really strong. Actually a friend who went to V99 on the Saturday (me and a friend went on the Sunday) said that they were a real highlight and he had never been much of a fan. They were a last minute replacement and according to him went down a storm.
Sadly there there doesn't appear to be any footage of the William Bell-Judy Clay original of Private Number, but William Bell has sung it with others since Judy Clay died in 2001, including Texas and Joss Stone, and this after the 911 cover version in 1999.

Suffice to say that Bell is now 86 and still singing.
Yes the duo with Sharleen Spiteri is fantastic. They should've done some more things together. You can see how much both of them enjoyed the experience.
DeleteI don't know about you, but certain songs like 'I Want It That Way' seem in my mind to be bigger hits.
ReplyDeleteOnly one week at number one.
