As I recall, I think we both kinda liked the 4th of October 1996 edition of Top of the Pops!

      Ah, I just loved the way ELO started the music on this show over the Top 30 chart rundown at No.27. Turn To Stone was the first single released from the legendary Out Of The Blue album, which would see more single releases from it through 1978.

      A video-heavy show this one, with the best coming from The Carpenters at No.10 with Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft. It was so 70s in romanticism, and still love it to this day, as well as the Abba video at No.1 with The Name of The Game.

      Pick of the studio performances has to be ShowaddyWaddy with Dancing Party, which I always thought was their finest single, even ahead of Under The Moon Of Love.

    Chart rundown video - LL Cool JJ giving us a turn-on sort of video, sexy girls, fun times, and drinks galore. Not sure if it was worth a new entry as high as No.7 though.

    The chart rundown this week featured two new entries at peak position, with no TOTP play - first Reel 2 Real at No.24 with Are You Ready For Some More? Well, TOTP didn't think so. Turned out to be Reel's final single, so at least they didn't bow out failing to make the Top 40, as all seven singles of theirs since 1994 made it comfortably into the Top 30, with the lowest peak at No.27 - not bad, is it?

    The other new entry peaking in the Top 40 this week was Julian Cope with his last ever single called Planetary Sit-In, in a solo career going back to 1983 since leaving The Teardrop Explodes which came to prominence in 1981, so the curtain falls on a long singles career throughout the 80s and 90s for Cope right here in 1996.

    Celine Dion - love the new song and video at No.6 this week, and just edges Meat Loaf for best version of this Jim Steinman classic which the TOTP presenter quite rightly portrayed it at the end of the song with a bowl of popcorn.

      The First Time section had Iron Maiden's first performance in the TOTP studio in Feb 1980. I didn't know they ever appeared in the TOTP studio let alone perform in it, as I had always been accustomed to their videos being played in clips on the show over the years.

      The other pick of the show was the Feb 1976 TOTP performance of R&J Stone with We Do It. I only heard this years later, as I was only just turning 8 years old at the time in 1976, and wasn't yet into pop music until a couple of years later, but what a lovely song. There's rare video of this single in the snow in Hampstead Heath in London in the winter of 1975-76, and recommended viewing:
