  1. Football galore on this show, with the presenter Ian Wright, plus two football singles in main slots, namely Liverpool FC as the chart rundown video slot, 1300 Drums in the studio, and then Man Utd FC in the Top 10 rundown at No.6.

Highlight of the show for me was 1300 Drums, as I have no recollection of this at the time, but watching it tonight on BBC4, I was completely enamoured by the superb dance sound and the two can can girls, although not doing the can can, but the outfits were nice. Not sure why the blokes came in masks, as it would have been nice to see who they were.

Gina G. in the Live By Satellite section looked very thin compared to her previously fuller shape, so not sure why the sudden loss of bulk. Was she on one of those diets? Fifth appearance on TOTP before getting to No.1. What perseverance she had with the show!

Also spotted that just outside the Top 40 was Elvis Presley at peak position of No.45 with Heartbreak Hotel, which would have been a celebration of the 40th anniversary of his debut UK single released in May 1956 which eventually got to No.2, but fell just short of the Top 40 here in May 1996.

  2. The 96 football takeover of the charts is in full effect then.

JX and Smashing Pumpkins were excellent, everything else has either been on a lot or isn't my thing. So weird seeing Wrighty with hair!

  3. 1300 drums styled themselves the "The Unjustified Ancients Of M U", but they weren't the KLF.

    1. Good Lord, never crossed my mind, but the style and sound is very KLF-like!
