DeleteGood TOTP2 show was this one.
DeleteMy pick from it was the Recorded For Recall 2.1.75 with clips from the first TOTP show of 1975, the highlight of which was Kenny with The Bump which was a 70s dance craze, and of which Joe Tex got to No.2 with his Bump title A'int Gonna Bump No More With No Big Fat Woman.
The Bump in the 70s likely followed the 60s Locomotion dance craze, and the 80s had the Oops Upside Your Head dance craze from The Gap Band, and then in the 90s it was the Macarena.
Don't ask me about the 2000s as I had stopped following pop music by mid-1996 of which we are soon getting to that point on the 1996 reruns on BBC4 every week. Good Lord!
Lightning Seeds with their brand of Scouse IndiePop. Very radio friendly and I was a big fan at the time. Think we will be seeing a bit more of Mr Broudie this year…
ReplyDeleteThis week's dance number comes from Sasha and Maria Naylor (her big hit with Robert Miles awaits). Bit more chilled out this one and I quite enjoyed it.
Bon Jovi are always on the Pops these days. His son has just married one of the Stranger Things brats. Still seems odd watching all the new entries last week falling down the charts every time.
Moving more into the R&B genre with every release its Eternal..nothing memorable about this one unfortunately. Very average.
Great dance tune this from Gat Decor..had a bit of a remix as well since 92. Preferred the original which still gets more airplay today even though this version was the bigger hit.
Sorry Boyz but this is a definite MISS. Poor poor tune. Trying to be Boyz II Men. Yuck.
Remember this tune from Lush very well. Lots of airplay in the late night pubs (Purple Turtle in Reading I'm thinking of you). Like a lot.
Supergrass back again. Still sounding fabulous.

DeleteI wouldn't have thought Louise Wener would've been a big enough star to present Top of the Pops but then I remembered that she did appear on 'Shooting Stars' around this time. She's a good presenter and surprisingly down to earth without too much veiled cynicism for the acts. Only an oh so Britpop put down of hippydom when mentioning Technohead in the Top 10.

Sasha & Maria; Someone in a white bag at the start of this. Sadly no John & Yoko cover but a pleasant bit of dance from DJ Sasha who actually performed at the same Glastonbury as Yoko Ono. I saw both and had to take two or fifty steps back from one of them and it wasn't Yoko.
Good to hear the sweet, smiley voice of his collaborator Maria Nayler, soon to return with Robert Miles and the gorgeous 'One and One'. Good also to see people on stage doing enigmatic hand movements this late in the '90s.
Bon Jovi; 'These Days' a rugged return to form with some big harmonies.
Eternal; That was disappointing. They were far better than all the melisma carry on.
Gat Decor; A remix but still very 1992 in sound and philosophy. Great chorus to that though and good to revisit.
Boyzone; Big stars now so in an exotic location for their satellite appearance. Good song and less over emoting now from Ronan. They looked briefly like they were going to break in to the steps The Shadows did or maybe a couple of them needed the toilet.
Lush; Going Britpop and it really shows. This hasn't aged well. Cramming as many words into a line as possible then sung in that awful smile/pout voice that really got on my nerves by that time. Very by the manual 'Select' pleasing stuff. They had some mid '90s glamour in their appearance at least.
Supergrass; That looked a lot less informal than the last time they did it with the woodwind section all dressed the same. Still really fun. 'Going Out', as much as any single of the time, the sound of getting drunk outdoors on a sunny evening at University.
Take That; Minutes silence then for the passing of the That (for now) and of it could be seen to not be the most ambitious gesture to go out on, it's sweet and genuinely affecting. Even though I was a fellow of 20 I remember sort of wanting the song to go on for an extra verse. It's a touching performance with a distinct sadness behind all the smiling. I couldn't help but titter at Mark's tanktop. Hopefully the bizarre, totally unsentimental video will also get a feature while it stays at No.1.
Play out with a nice reminder of Blur in less self conscious days.
