Top of the Pops Untouchable

I'll soak my skin in alcohol until I feel the 16th of January 1998 edition of Top of the Pops!

Clocking on

16-1-98:   Presenter:  Jayne Middlemiss

(20) RIALTO – Untouchable
Getting the show underway with their second of three top 40 hits, this was the biggest but it got no higher.

(6) ROBBIE WILLIAMS – Angels
Third studio performance for the song which had peaked at number 4.

(11) CLOCK – That’s The Way (I Like It)
This KC and the Sunshine Band cover was at its peak.

(7) LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY – High
A second studio performance for the song that had already peaked at number 4.

(NEW) OASIS – All Around The World  (video)
Third and final single from their number one album, Be Here Now, and it will get to number one.

(1) ALL SAINTS – Never Ever
Finally making it to number one, even if for one week only.

(2) BAMBOO – Bamboogie  (video)  (and credits)
Their only top ten hit and it was at its peak.

  1. It was quite unusual to have two KC & The Sunshine Band covers in the same TOTP 1998 show. I didn't think that Clock were still going at this point, since their debut and big year of success in 1995 with three Top 10 singles with their own music, not covers, but the 1996-1999 period was a case of only doing disco covers, so this one here at the start of 1998 was one of the more successful ones for them at peak of No.11 this week.

The move to Clock doing disco covers seemed to be off the back of N-Trance first doing this in 1995 with Now That We Found Love, before Clock got on the same bandwagon and for the rest of their singles catalogue with line-up changes since the male-dominated line up in 1995 with the Top 10 singles and their most successful year.

In terms of Bamboo at No.2, I don't recall this one at all, but I like the video, which I wonder what KC & The Sunshine Band thought of this cover of their 1975 disco classic Get Down Tonight. Need to watch the Bamboo video in full over the weekend. Anyway, looks like this was a one-hit wonder for Bamboo, as only one other single a few months later called The Strutt, only made it to No.36.

    Ready for TOTP2 Rob....

  2. Oasis single wasn't bad. Dory I thought the same regarding the KC songs. Not a bad edition overall.

  3. Ray Heffernans "Angels" great song ....oops I mean Robbie Williams.

    Clock - inoffensive remake.

All Saints - TOTP really did love them.

Oasis - Overated to Morrisey and Paul Weller proportions and and the only decent song, Noel sings it.

BAMBOO – Bamboogie - Someone got a new sampler for Christmas and made this instantly forgettable drivel.

    2. Two interesting features on this 17-1-98 TOTP2 show:

In The First Time section, I didn't know that Dexys Midnight Runners first time on TOTP was in January 1980 with Dance stance, as it must have come and gone as just another one of those new bands trying to make it on the show. For years I thought that Geno was their first single in May of that year, getting to No.1 of course.

The other golden nugget on this show was the 'video' of KC & The Sunshine Band's That's The Way I Like It, to show us the original, now that as Steve Wright mentions, Clock were having a current Top 20 hit with their cover in January 1998. Just love the orange jacket and 70s shirt that KC was wearing in that 1975 clip, which reminded me of our sofa we had at home in 1975 when I was 7 years old. Good Lord!

  5. I'm wondering if the totp2 shows will ever get repeated on BBC4 when they finish the normal totp. I also thought all the clips were from old totp. Some are from other specials of shows.

    1. Facebook deleted my account for some reason so I can't access the group they were posted on. Luckily I can still contact the person (Ben) who shares the show on the page via DS so I have got access. However they won't be AI upscaled anymore as there was less and less being interested in TOTP2 now it changed to Steve Wright on the Facebook group.

    4. Thanks Rob, appreciate your explanation, and considering that Steve Wright has kept the Johnnie Walker format in the first Wright series of TOTP2, I am still watching these episodes, so thanks for putting them up, but I seem to remember that at some stage, and don't know exactly when, Wright threw out the format completely to go to his orange rectangular graphics which kind of lost the fabric of the original TOTP2 series with Johnnie Walker, and that is when I will stop watching them, so keep going, and thanks.

    5. Thanks Rob

I'm still watching these and are great.
I never really watched TOTP2 when it was originally broadcast, so I'm enjoying all the posts.

It doesnt bother me at all that they are not the 'ai' versions, as I prefer the originals.
These are the files the 'ai' version were originally made from.
So, if people want the 'ai' version, just encode it yourself.

So keep them coming, I really appreciate it.

    6. Thank you once again Rob! Quality isn’t an issue for me as long as the episodes are uploaded

    1. You may have originally shared them (I don't know) and Rob is reposting them, but what is your problem?
The is no click. There is no sad little group.
We can't get them from you, if you are the original source.
No one can even contact you (I assume) so Rob is kindly posting them and so we thank him.
I'm not entering a flame war, but I think you have sat out in the sun too long.

No answer on just ONE person complaining.

Last of all my dear Mother used to say, if you havn't got anything nice to say, say nothing at all.
