Things and getting strange, I'm starting to worry, this could be a case for the 30th of January 1998 edition of Top of the Pops!

Wow, the full 45-minute original show on BBC4 last night - Good Lord the great days are back again as Tight Fit once said on their single Back To The 60s.
DeleteHighlight of the show for me was Mistura's The Flasher, danced to by Ruby Flipper, which had an oh so 70s sound, and still sounds good today, but would not grace today's dance floors unfortunately. Not that I care, as my dance floor days are a thing of the past.
Lucky guy in Ruby Flipper whoever that was that got to lift Cherry Gillespie onto his shoulders in the outfit she was wearing. Good Lord!
They cut credits by 2 minutes, early fade out.
DeleteI must say I just love the Chumbawumba song called Amnesia at No.10. Apparently a follow-up to Tubthumping which until now I thought was their only hit, so this goes to show why you can find some real gems in these 90s TOTP shows even though in 1996 I stopped watching TOTP and also stopped following the charts.
ReplyDeleteByron Stingily - impressive cover of Sylvester's 1978 original, with two sexy girls dancing on stage for good measure, and who must now be in their 40s reminiscing on their appearance on stage. Good Lord!
I absolutely love Catatonia, and Cerys looked so good on this episode. I was a huge fan of their previous album so it was really exciting to see them get big success with International Velvet. Good to hear that Chumbawamba track again. Byron Stingiky - there's a name I haven't heard since well, probably 1998! Bit bored of Robbie and All Saints now, as I was back then. Amazing songs but come on, let them die already . Fab Green Day performance of a song that has really endured Weird how what would become two of the biggest funeral songs (that and Angels) ended up on the same episode
ReplyDeleteI was watching the 1986 edition shown last night. There seemed to be a sound issue during Amazulu's track. It was a great show though. As Dory mentioned, the full 45 minutes of the 1976 edition last night was broadcast. Another great show. Nice to hear The Beach Boys on the playout after the recent sad news regarding Brian Wilson.
ReplyDeleteYes i wondered about that too. I saw that the sound was different and the screen switched from video tape to film. Also seemed to be that way during the 1st chart rundown. Was it a damaged tape?
DeleteGreat single which always brings back happy memories. Liked Gary Davies' mention of Amazulu playing Glastonbury that weekend which must've been a novel reference in BBC television at that point. The one incidentally where The Cure played a legendary headliner with a full electric storm occuring all around them.
Looking at the following clips on youtube:

From TOTP2:

Both clips of Amazulu don't have the same audio drop outs, so was probably BBC4 playout/version.
